Igniting Minds. Infusing Faith

What is Odyssey of the Mind?

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.  In additions to creative problem-solving skills the program promotes quick thinking under pressure and working together as a team. Children spend 8 months working diligently on a problem that only they can solve - coaches and parents are not allowed to provide ideas or assist in any way.  Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level.

Sarasota Christian School has enjoyed a successful past with Odyssey of the Mind over its 13-year involvement with the program, sending 29 teams to State Competition and 18 teams to World Finals, placing as high as 1st in the World!

In 2017 Sarasota Christian School's High School Odyssey of Mind team made its 7th appearance at World Finals at Michigan State University. This team of juniors and seniors placed 1st at State Competition, sweeping all three scoring categories, the only team in the State of Florida to do so. They placed 4th overall in World Competition, going up against teams from around the country and the globe. The team has won 6 State Championships, coming in the top ten 5 times at World Finals, and placing as high as 1st in previous years at the international competition.

In addition, the team nominated one of its own, Tony Colton, for the Omer's Award, which recognizes those who serve as exemplary role models through their actions and words. Tony has been battling cancer for 6 years and through all of his surgeries and chemo treatments he always gave 100% effort. The crowd of nearly 18,000 responded to Tony's win with an overwhelmingly emotional standing ovation.  Tony passed away two months after receiving this award on July 30, 2017 and is greatly missed by the entire SCS community.
