1958 |
Five local families concerned with educating their children in a Christian
environment founded Sarasota Mennonite Christian Day School, which began with 49 pupils from
first through eighth grade. The school first met at Tuttle Avenue Mennonite Church and tuition
cost $175.00 per pupil. |

March: The school’s first auction raised over $800.00 and was held in Pinecraft
Park. At this time, the women of the community plucked the chickens by hand for our famous
chicken barbeque. |
1959 |
July: A deed was granted by Sarasota County to the school for a piece of
property on Bahia Vista Street. |

1960 |
April 23: The school held a groundbreaking ceremony at the property on Bahia Vista Street
to construct the current administration building. After the ceremony, a fellowship meal was
served and everyone participated in a baseball game. |
1962 |
September: A kindergarten program was added to the current grades. |

November: The school’s official name was changed to Sarasota Christian School. |
1965 |
120 students enrolled for the 1965-1966 school year. |

1965 |
September: The first uniform policy was established for SCS students. |
1966 |
February: The annual auction was moved from Pinecraft Park to the SCS campus. |

1974 |
January: SCS Board of Directors approved an athletic team – Baseball. |
1983 |
May: SCS graduated the first 12th grade class with 11 diplomas distributed. |

April: A dedication ceremony was held for the music building (currently high school
building) and groundbreaking for the gymnasium. |
1989 |
December: The school’s Auction Committee brought a suggestion to the Board of
Directors that the auction remain on the third weekend in February – a tradition that continues
today. |

1992 |
September: 438 students enrolled for the 1992-1993 school year. |
1997 |
November: The first Torch newsletter was distributed to 3,000 community members. |

2000 |
Completed the current middle school building which includes classrooms, meeting rooms, and
a multi-purpose room. |
2002 |
September: 598 students enrolled for the 2002-2003 school year. |

2005 |
SCS crowned Floyd E. Lay Dodge Cup winner for class 1A Private as best overall athletic program and best boy’s athletic program in the state of Florida. |
2005 |
February: 6,000 community members gathered together for SCS’s annual auction,
which brought proceeds of over $220,000 to the school. |
